Digital Marketing Internship Course

My most productive 90 minutes in 2019

I’ve been interested in learning about Digital Marketing for a long time. I had always faced challenges in finding a genuine and affordable, company or a professional, to perform this important task. Hence, I was unable to properly grow the business.

I attended a few sessions from Digital Vidya but was too busy with my other commitments at the time and couldn’t follow through. But the good thing that came out of it was that I got introduced to Deepak, whose training style I was immediately able to connect with.

He didn’t use fancy vocabulary and shared real-life experiences, which was refreshing! Hence, when I got this opportunity to take him on as a mentor, I pounced on it.

Enough about me and how I got here. Now let me tell you how Day 1 of this Digital Marketing Internship went!

For me, this session has been about fact finding, clarity, myth busting, conditioning, insight, tools can be used for market research; and defining the basics — Communication!

Fact Finding
— How the right information is like Gold in marketing and where to find it?

From the vast pool of information which is flowing on the Internet today, you need to focus on finding what information to use and where to look for the right information. Take for instance the example of an entrepreneur: What would the right product for one to sell? How to find one’s niche?Creating products that people need and filling a void is the best place to start and has been the success story for many. Example — Videocon when they introduced Washing Machines in India. For the longest time ever, they ruled the washing machines space even after better products were introduced.

Myth Busting

Myth 1 — India is not the right place to start a business
India is young and growing. The median age in India is 27.1 years in 2019 — Sure, go on — Google it! There is no better place to be successful.

Myth 2 — Automation would kill Digital Marketing jobs
Think of all the new products, professions and jobs which exist today, which were unheard of before automation.
Remember that technology is just another facilitator for using real human values. Humans always yearn for communication with other humans — see what social media is all about?

Conditioning
 — Communication is the foundation for wealth creation in any business!

Listening and understanding what people want will help in creating a product that they need. Then, while giving that product to people you need to still make them understand that its of good value. If you are unable to communicate what value you are creating, you won’t be able to create wealth from your efforts. Communication is what differentiates a good seller or a marketer from others. That’s the only way you would be able to get the right value for the product you have created.

Think about this article. The reason you are reading it till now is because I am being able to communicate right to you and you are finding some value in my thoughts!

For who want to commit to make their English communication better, some of the tried and tested ways are:

  • Read a lot, like at least 30 mins a day. Anything from a newspaper to various books.
  • Listen to podcasts, again 30 mins a day would be enough. Google Podcasts & Podcast Addict are 2 great apps to start.
  • Write a lot, at least 500 words a day. Practice makes it perfect.
  • Watch English movies, TV and web series. This helps you absorb content.

Mastering Communication and understanding consumer needs and wants are key to creating wealth.

Insight — Integrated Digital Marketing Concept

Digital Marketing is vast. It’s not a niche you can master fully. But you need to make sure that you use the various aspects of digital marketing and use their strengths to complement each other to get the best results.
That’s the idea behind the Integrated Digital Marketing Concept. You can dig deeper into it here later.

Insight into Finding the Gold — Finding your Niche!

The market is ever expanding and specializations have gained more value than ever. Hence, focus on finding a niche, which you think you can be a leader in. To do this, you will need a combination of all the three:

  • Talent — Only talent in creating a product won’t help you sell if there is no Market Opportunity and you won’t be able to do it for long without Passion.
  • Passion — Just passion makes you an enthusiast, not a creator. You need Talent which comes from experience and Market Opportunity so that the product sells.
  • Market Opportunity — Without it, a passionately created product with lots of Talent would just be your hobby project.

Your niche is your gold and finding the market opportunity is the process of finding the gold.

Still wondering?
“How to find your niche?”
“How to actually do it?”

The answer is simple: Find out what problem you have and how you would solve it!

A problem you have is the one you best understand.

Example: OYO Rooms addressed the BnB needs of business travelers in India when Ritesh Agarwal first launched Oravel. He realized during his personal stays in budget hotels in India about the lack of predictability in case of budget accommodations. He wanted to end these moments of failure.

A few tools you can use to research on Market Opportunity and check out your competition and learn from their efforts are:
Free: Google Trends, Search Console, Google Adwords Keyword Tool, UberSuggest
Paid: Answer the Public, Ahrefs, Moz Keyword Explorer, SEMrush, KeywordTool.io

There is so much that I learnt from this single session that it has been very difficult to put it all in one short article. I am excited to see what the next lesson brings on 24th Dec.
